Closing prayer (Rualchhina Vangchhia)
Chairman Dr Lalliana Mualchin Secretary Rualchhina VangchhiaStuart Spani is joining Lalliana Mualchin on March 2nd to fly to Mizoram, via Los Angeles, Tokyo and Calcutta, arriving at the new Lengpui airport near Aizawl on the morning of March 6th. This will be Stuart's third visit to Mizoram, which he calls the land of the laughing eyes. On previous visits most of his time has been spent in the capital city of Aizawl with two short day trips into smaller centers. This time an extensive tour throughout southern Mizoram has been arranged, from March 9th through 20th. This will allow him to experience Mizo village life, the traditional Mizo way of life. He is excited about visiting places he has read about in Mizoram history books and from diaries of some of the early missionaries. He particularly hopes to meet some of the students from the early school in south central Mizoram.
Stuart has already produced two videos on Mizoram and written a short booklet. One of these videos "Mizoram, God's Chosen Jewel" is now available in the Mizo language, and will soon be produced in Hindii, Punjabi, Mandarin and Cantonese. During this trip he plans to produce a video promoting tourism, a video report on the Fielding Institute visit, and a third in depth video on life in Mizoram.
Stuart and Lalliana will be joined by Fielding Institute's US/Canada team of 22 from March 22nd to March 31st. This will be an intensively exciting time as they brainstorm how the west and Mizoram can become partners in developing appropriate projects to improve the economic infrastructure of Mizoram without destroying the unique lifestyle the people of Mizoram enjoy. This will be a real challenge and your prayer for continuous guidance is sought.
Stuart will then spend 13 days in Thailand taking videos of several mission projects in that country. These include visiting the Hill Tribes Resource and Development Center founded by a Mizo missionary and her Thai husband (see November's newsletter).
Stuart requests your prayer support for himself and all of those travelling to Mizoram and for God's protection and guidance throughout their travels.
Part Two - Lallura's work among the Tibetans
Since 1621, when the first missionary arrived in Tibet, many unsuccessful attempts to reach the Tibetans have failed. Today all people groups in Tibet are considered unreached. However, the statistical figure given is that 1.4% are Christians.
Language study is of utmost importance for any work among Tibetans. When the Christian speaks of God, in his mind this word conveys the concept of the Supreme and Eternal Spirit, Creator and Sustainer of all things, whose essence is love, whose presence is all holy and whose ways are all righteous. But for the Tibetan, the word "god" means something entirely different. When the Christian speaks of prayer, he means the spiritual communion between God, our Father, and His children. For the Tibetan, prayer is the repetition of intricate formulae and mystic phrases handed down from time immemorial.
Even in Kathmandu, Nepal, we face problems when we evangelize. We had to move from our home rented from a Hindu because he wanted to imprison us for evangelizing in our home. Yet we continue to share the gospel through Bible tracts, drama, etc., in Tibetan refugee camps around Kathmandu and in northwestern Nepal.
Jesus said that when the Holy Spirit came upon His disciples they would receive power to be His witnesses. When the Holy Spirit came upon them, they would receive power to be martyrs, not just in the sense of dying on a stake or cross, but martyrs that would die to themselves daily. So, a Spirit-filled witness is one who lives the crucified life.
I plan to disciple well-instructed believers who can share the Gospel with others in their own culture. If the missionary vision is not instilled in the local church, the church may remain an isolated and defensive group of believers whose presence is barely tolerated by non-Christians. By contrast, local believers properly instructed and trained can win others to Christ without having to overcome all the cross-cultural obstacles faced by foreign missionaries.
Since May 1999, God has opened the door for us to open an orphanage for ten children who are Tibetan or of Tibetan background. We plan to build up faith in their hearts and to put the Gospel seeds in them. My chief aim is as stated in Proverbs 22:6, "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it".
Under the guidance of God, these children understand why we are praying, why we are singing the Lord's songs, who is Jesus, who is God, what is sin, and what is Heaven and what is Hell. Now they are praying for their families to know and to believe Jesus Christ. We believe that someday they will become a real army for Jesus to attack Satan with the power of Jesus and rescue their people from the hands of Satan.
Through these children, I plan to build up relation-bridges to their families, relatives and to their villages which will give us an opportunity to evangelize them, train them to be disciples, baptize them, and teach them to obey whatever our Lord commands.
